Ghana E-Visa Platform Launch - Digital Transformation for Travel

President John Dramani Mahama launched Ghana's e-visa platform on African Union Day, May 25, 2026

The Government of Ghana has officially launched its electronic visa (e-visa) platform in a major step toward modernising the country's immigration and border management systems. The initiative was unveiled by President John Dramani Mahama on 25 May 2026 during celebrations marking the 63rd African Union Day.

The introduction of the e-visa portal is expected to transform Ghana's visa application process by replacing traditional manual procedures with a secure technology-driven system aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and border security management.

Speaking during the launch ceremony, President Mahama described the initiative as more than just a technological advancement, stating that it reflects Ghana's commitment to innovation, connectivity, effective governance, and improved public service delivery.

Visa-Free Entry for African Passport Holders

One of the most significant announcements made during the launch was the decision to waive visa fees for holders of African passports traveling to Ghana, effective immediately from 25 May 2026.

According to President Mahama, the move aligns with the African Union's Agenda 2063 vision, particularly the flagship programme promoting the African Passport and the free movement of people across the continent. He emphasized that easing travel restrictions within Africa is essential for strengthening regional integration, economic cooperation, and intra-African trade.

The President further noted that the policy complements the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), whose successful implementation depends heavily on the seamless movement of people, goods, and services across African borders.

Strengthening Business, Tourism, and Investment

Ghana's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, stated that the launch demonstrates Ghana's determination to position itself as an open and accessible destination for business, tourism, and international partnerships.

He explained that the e-visa system has been designed with enhanced international-standard security features to ensure that national security remains protected while simplifying travel procedures for visitors.

Minister for the Interior

Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak noted that efficient immigration systems are increasingly important in attracting global investors and strengthening international competitiveness.

Minister for Transport

Joseph Bukari Nikpe highlighted that integrating the e-visa platform with passenger information systems will enhance border control and the visitor experience.

Ghana Strengthens Pan-African and Caribbean Relations

The launch ceremony was attended by Kamina Johnson Smith, Jamaica's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, who praised Ghana for championing African unity, digital innovation, and stronger ties between Africa and the Caribbean.

She commended Ghana's long-standing commitment to Pan-Africanism and acknowledged the historic cultural relationship shared between Ghana and Jamaica.

A Strategic Move for Africa's Connectivity Agenda

The launch of Ghana's e-visa platform comes at a time when several African nations are accelerating digital transformation within immigration and travel systems to improve competitiveness and support regional integration.

Industry observers believe the initiative could strengthen Ghana's position as a leading destination for tourism, trade, conferences, and investment in West Africa while contributing to the broader continental agenda of facilitating easier movement across Africa.

The event brought together government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, aviation stakeholders, security agencies, tourism partners, and representatives from various sectors of the economy.

Underscoring the significance of the initiative to Ghana's future economic and regional ambitions.
